Research & Development

The Sand and Polymers project of Elisava is dedicated to researching microplastics and mesoplastics on Barcelona beaches, with the aim of understanding their distribution and characteristics. Through systematic sampling, these contaminating particles are identified and classified according to their size and density. Primary microplastics, which are introduced directly into the environment, and secondary microplastics, which result from the degradation of larger plastics, will be analyzed to evaluate their ecological impact. Using precise GPS coordinates, strategic sampling points are established in the sand, contributing to awareness about plastic pollution and promoting actions to mitigate this environmental problem.

Pollution

Impact of plastic in the sea of Barcelona.

Identification

Determination of the amount and types of plastics in a single area.

Awareness

Promote awareness about how plastic pollution affects the food chain and the health of coastal ecosystems.
